How to - run Android apps on your PC

Apps on popular mobile platforms such as Android, iOS and Windows Mobile are functional, compact and sometimes, very beautifully designed. Most of the features and information you get from them could practically be used on the desktop. Unfortunately, they aren’t available for the desktop so you’ll find yourself lifting your phone to check out the latest tweets or maybe play a game of Cut the Rope.

What if you could do all of these things on your desktop itself. You can using a remote desktop application installed on your phone or tablet. It’s more complicated and it requires you to use the resources of your devices. There’s a simpler way to run these apps directly off your PC and we’re going to show you how  dojust that.

Introducing Bluestacks
Bluestacks is that magical software that’ll let you run Android apps on your PC. Now, Bluestacks supports Windows, which means you could technically run Android apps on your desktop, notebook or even a Windows tablet. Bluestacks is a virtualization software that allows Android apps to work on a layer above Windows. Remember that some of the apps on Android require some acceleration through graphics hardware. If you’re using an old netbook or PC, some of these apps may not function or may not perform very well.

Download and install Bluestacks

Head over to the Bluestacks site and download the application. There are two versions available for download - one an online installer that’ll download data from the web as it installs and the other, an offline installer that is bulkier. It’s just under 100MB and it should take no more than 15 minutes on a moderately quick connection. Installing the application should take no more than a minute or two.

Configure BlueStacks settings
Once the installation is complete, Bluestacks will load into a window with a large text entry bar and a few icons at the top. On the bottom right, you’ll find a Settings icon. You can use the mouse to click on the menus or use the directional keys on the keyboard. Pressing the Enter key enters a menu and pressing Escape will take you back one step in the menu. There’s even a menu button on the left bottom of the screen and a home button at the centre. You can use your mouse to perform all kinds of gestures as well. Set up your keyboard layout and language settings.

Searching and installing apps

Now that you have BlueStacks running Android on your PC, the next obvious step is to install apps on it. Bluestacks has three app stores that come bundled with it, so all the apps you search for will be looked for, in these. GetJar, Amazon App store as well as the official Google app store are present. You can browse the apps manually as well.

Screenshots are also available, as are the app recommendations. Choose the apps you want and install them by clicking on the Download link. You can then start the app by clicking on it using the My Apps icon in the dock hovering at the top of the screen.

Run apps in a larger view

Bluestacks gives you the option to run applications in a tablet-like view or a mobile phone. To change the layout of the app you’re using, click on the Settings button and click on Manage App size. Here, you can choose the size that you want to run the app in. Click on Done to save the settings. Bluestacks will restart to make the settings active.

So, that’s how you can get your favorite Android apps to run on Windows. If you don’t have an Android device, this is your chance to get a look and feel of the apps on the popular platform. However, if you already use an Android device, you can check out the Cloud connect feature to get all the apps from your phone to your desktop.

How to Subtitle Your Videos

Here's how you can add subtitles to your video files, plus links to some useful software...
How to Subtitle Your Videos
So you remove your DVD remotes, put in City of God DivX CD that you have illegally downloaded/ripped, and voila! No subtitles. You won’t understand even the swear words, so what’s the point? In India, we make movies in a zillion languages, yet good films are few and far between. We also have homegrown videos, where intelligibility of speech and vision is a debatable issue. So subtitles are a part of your DVD architecture that can make life a lot easier.

No worries, here are some tips for retrieving subtitles from the net, adding your own subs, changing their colour etc. I've added pointers on how to resync your subtitles if they go out of sync, as that also happens a lot, yielding funny lip movements. On a frank and serious note, these issues never arise in an original DVD or official download, and it actually is less stressful watching good ol’ box packs. But for anti-DRM folks out there, there's more...

Subtitle Resources

Resources for Subtitles
The first and best way to get your subtitles is to rip it out of the DVD. Let's run through the process. There are quite a few methods and softwares that do it, but I go by the following process. First get yourself VobSub from here. This is a free subtitle filtering utility that works on the Directshow environment. The files associated with it are .sub and .idx. There are other types of subtitle files; we will encounter them as we go along. VobSub is important as it is anyway needed to play subtitles for any AVI file in software media players, provided the .sub and .idx file are in the same directory as the movie, and with the same name.

DirectVobSub

Another option is to get SubRip from here. This essentially creates text files though the .srt extension. To create your own subtitles, the best software is a spanking new one called Aegisub, so grab it here. There used to be the famous Substation Alpha software, which is not being updated anymore, though it deserves a mention in any subtitle article. The file type it generates is .ssa (again a text), and the mentioned Aegisub supports it. Further, .srt files and many others are also supported. The last, and easiest, thing you can do is download .srt or .sub files from the Internet.

Aegisub

Adding Subtitles
There are two types of 'subbing': hard and soft. Which do you need? Wait, before that, what do they mean? Hard subbing means permanently adding the subs to your video (it will be in the pixels), whereas soft subbing lets you view the video with separate subtitles files being called by the codec, mainly in MPEG 4 part 2 and part 10 file types like DivX, Xvid, and H.264. But, if your DVD player doesn’t support DivX and you have only a VCD option, hard subbing is mandatory. Soft subbing is actually a misnomer; you have to just download the subtitle file, install Vobsub, place the file in the same directory, and watch the clip on something as generic as Windows Media Player. Don’t forget to rename the file to the movie’s name. Even if you create your own subs with Aegisub, you can export and save as normal .sub or .srt subtitle files and view them. Aegisub can be used to do timing and resynching edits, adjust frames per title, adjust colors of the subtitle, and every other small whim. The learning curve is quite flat, too.

VirtualDub

Hard subbing
This is the fun and involving part, though not that tough to execute. I use VirtualDub; you can get it here. It's probably the best AVI tool available. Install VirtualDub with all the plugin options; you are required to do this in the option provided while installation wizard. The main file we will need is actually from VobSub installation, namely called text sub, and it shows up as an option while running the wizard.

Once this is done, it's very easy. All you need is the sub file (placed in a folder you can remember). Then open VirtualDub, get in your video, go to filter (Ctrl+F), and add the text sub-filter. The plugin will open and ask for the subtitle file (.srt), so browse and locate it. That’s all. Preview once and render. It could take a while.

The end result after incorporating subtitles in videos

Conclusion
There are other means, but they are lengthier and require more plugins and steps. This gets the job done, and is practical. So, to sum up, you need to either download the files from the net, or create your own, then it’s up to you whether you want to hard sub or soft sub. Last but not least, do respect the developers of the software!

How to - Send and receive SMSes via your Android phone on your PC
While most of us would have moved to Google Talk and other messaging apps, such as Whatsapp, there might still be many others around who depend on the traditional text messaging service present on every device out there -  SMS. Not all phones support Whatsapp or any of the other fancy apps and many people still don't use data connectivity on their phones. SMSes can be painful if you’re working - you need to turn on the phone, browse through some menus and reply to texts using a tiny keypad or touchscreen. Whatsapp is particularly useful as it pops up notifications, so you can keep your phone aside, on silent without worrying about missing incoming messages and calls.

Now, a new Android app called MightyText is making news. It lets you simply compose and receive and read all your SMSes messages, right off the browser. All you need is an Android mobile phone and Internet connectivity. Remember that this app still uses your mobile connection to send SMSes, so be aware that you’re going to be billed for messages, as per your existing plan. Let’s look at how to get this running.

Download the browser extension
MightyText as of now, is available on the PC as a browser extension. There’s support for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer 9. Head over to the Install page on MightyText’s site and install the extension of the browser (or browsers) you use. Once the app is installed, restart the browser.

Install the MightyText Android app

Downloading the app and extension for your device

The MightyText app as of now, is only available for Android devices. It has support for Android versions 2.2 (Froyo) and above. You can download it from the Google Play store page. You can find it on the app store through your phone. The app is a little more than 300KB in size and hardly takes up any system resources.

Authorizing the app and extension

Once you have the app installed on your phone, start it and you’ll be prompted to allow the app to be linked with your Gmail account. You’ll also have to sign in with the extensions installed on the web browser on your PC. Use the same account being used on the Google ID used for the phone.

Receiving and sending SMS

Composing a message is simple

Composing a message is simple

To do this, make sure that your phone is always connected to the Internet. You can use your mobile provider's data connection to do this or even Wi-Fi for that matter. All you need to do is click on the extension icon on your browser. In case of Google Chrome, this icon appears right next to the Settings icon on the top. MightyText will sign in with your Google account and you’ll see a list of messages and contacts to the left of your screen. To send a message, simply click on the Compose New button. Type in the message and if you want to make it an MMS, attach a media file to it. The message will be sent to your phone over the Internet and your phone will then send that message to the recipient.

Enabling contact names and photos

Enabling contact names in place of confusing phone numbers

Enabling contact names in place of confusing phone numbers

Once you have MightyText running, you’ll notice that your existing history of messages will appear in the list to the left of the screen. To be able to see names, you need to sync your Google Contacts list with these numbers. Once you do that, you’ll see names and even a photo of the person. This makes identifying and sending messages much simpler. To do this, click on the Sync with Google Contacts link on the top right of the window.

One of the neat features of MightyText is the ability to get notifications when you receive a call, while you’re working. You can then choose to answer the call on your phone. Just keep in mind that if you’re using a 2G connection for example, your data connection will disconnect when you get a call, so you won’t get a notification of the call after the person on the other end has hung up. It’s advisable to use Wi-Fi or 3G connections if receiving call notifications instantly is important to you.

How to: Install Windows 8 on a pen drive

This How to will demonstrate how you can install and run Windows 8 from a USB drive without disturbing your existing operating system on your PC.
How to: Install Windows 8 on a pen drive
Windows 8, the latest edition to Microsoft's OS evolution is making big waves in the PC arena. We are sure that many of you are eagerly waiting to try out the new Windows 8 Preview on your PCs, to have a first look and glimpse of what Microsoft has in store for you with the new operating system. Installing Windows 8 on your PC, which already has Windows 7 or Windows XP installed can be quite a task—backing up data, clearing space for the new OS, reinstalling, and so on. However, before that, the pain of burning the downloaded ISO file on a DVD or on a USB pen drive to get the installation ready also makes it a killing task. We shall show you how you can relax and enjoy the complete features of Windows 8 on your existing PC without going through any of the above cumbersome exercises and run the new operating system in less than half the time.

This How to will reveal the installation of Windows 8 on any USB storage and then running the operating system directly from the USB drive, itself. You will not have to go through any of the painful set-up procedures that the set-up installer asks, while installing Windows 8 on your PC. All you need to do is download a simple utility, a 16GB or higher USB storage drive, the Windows 8 ISO file, WinRAR archiver and your existing PC. Before we begin, we would like you to know that using a USB pen drive will suffice, but since the speed of a regular USB pen drive is very sluggish, we recommend using an external USB storage drive.
Step 1
Step 1

To begin with, assuming you have a PC that already has Windows 7 running and WinRAR installed, extract the file ‘install.wim’ from the Windows 8 ISO file using WinRAR. This file will be located under the folder ‘Sources’ and is around 2GB in size. Extract it to the desktop. Now go ahead and download a tiny 500 KB utility, called ‘GimageX’ from the ‘http://tinyurl.com/gimagexv2’ and extract the file to a folder on your desktop. This folder will have both the 32-bit and 64-bit utility. Choose the appropriate one depending on the operating system that you are already running on your PC. Now, before we use the utility, we have to prepare the USB drive for installing Windows 8. Make sure you have all your data backed up from the drive, as we would need to clean out the drive completely. Proceed ahead when ready.
Step 2
Step 2

Plug-in the USB drive, wait for a while, if the drivers are not yet installed and let the system recognize the new drive. Now start the Windows command prompt and type the following commands one after the other as given below:
  • Diskpart (This built-in utility will help repartition and format the new drive)
  • List disk (This command will list all the drives present on your system. Note down the drive number of your USB drive)
  • Select disk # (Replace the # with the drive number that represents your USB drive in the list)
  • Clean (This command will wipe the entire partition table of the USB drive)
  • Create partition primary (This command will create a primary partition on the USB drive)
  • Select partition 1 (This command will select the primary partition for the rest of the process)
  • Format fs=ntfs quick (This command will quick format the primary partition in NTFS file format)
  • Assign (This command will assign a drive letter to the new partition for Windows to work on)
  • Active (This command will make the partition active to enable booting)
  • Exit (Closes the DISKPART utility)

Now that the drive is ready for installation of the new operating system, start the GimageX utility and click on the tab ‘apply’. In the source field, specify the ‘INSTALL.WIM’ file, which you earlier extracted from the Windows ISO file. In the destination field, select the USB drive letter that you just got ready. Let all the settings in the remaining fields be untouched and hit the ‘Apply’ button. GimageX will not extract the contents of the Install.wim file, which contains the necessary Windows 8 folders and system files on the USB drive. Note: This procedure should take a few minutes and will depend on the speed of your USB drive.

If you are using a regular pendrive, then the time taken will be longer than on any 2.5-inch external USB storage drive. Once done, GimageX will display that the process is complete. Exit the GimageX utility and start the command prompt again. We now need to make the USB drive bootable in order to run Windows 8 from the USB drive. For this, we will have to specify a command from the command prompt window. Run the following command as below.
Step 3
Step 3

In the command above, F: is the drive letter of the USB drive where the Windows 8 files have been extracted to earlier by the GimageX utility. Remember to replace the drive letter of your USB drive, accordingly. This command will take a few seconds to transfer the necessary booting files to the USB drive. Once done, you can quit from the command prompt.
Step 4
Step 4

That’s it! Shut down your PC, get into the BIOS, enable booting from the USB drive and restart the PC. Your PC will now boot from the USB drive directly into Windows 8. All that is needed in the next step is to specify the serial key and give details, such as username and password. Windows will be up and running in no time and install the necessary drivers in the background. You can now go ahead and configure Windows 8, as you wish and install all your software and applications, as you would on a new PC. All software and applications will be installed on the USB drive by default, unless specified with a different path.
Step 5
Step 5 - Simply replace the drive name ''h" with "F"

Make sure you have an Internet connection set-up for your PC, if you are using your Microsoft Live (Hotmail) account to be linked with your Windows 8 installation. Once done, you can simply shut down, disconnect your USB drive and get back to your older operating system without any trace of having Windows 8 installed on your PC. You can plug-in this USB drive on any other PC and have Windows 8 running on that PC.

You can also use this trick to install Windows 8 on an internal hard drive and have Windows 8 installed without having to go through the entire process of installing the OS using a DVD ROM.

How to: Make your own portable apps

Some use IrfanView as a basic image editor, while others prefer using Photoshop. You might even use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for a more advanced use. Well, the software is usually installed on individual PCs and when you are using another PC, be it in office, college, a friend’s home or elsewhere, you cannot expect the same software to be installed. Installing the same software to work faster would need you to carry it wherever you are or download huge files and pay for multiple licenses. But what if you don’t have the installer with you and the internet is down or slow?
Start capturing your installation
Start capturing your installation

Well, this is the case with many PC users who need to carry their work around on pen drives but lack access to the software the data is created with. If there was a portable version of the same software that you use, it can save your day. The portable app would simply run from the external drive and would need no installation whatsoever. This not only allows you to carry along your work software with you, but it also saves a lot of time if the other PC does not have the required software installed. Many ordinary programs can be turned into portable ones. Doing this used to be quite a task, but it isn't anymore. We'll show you how to make portable apps for Windows using two methods, one of which runs on your PC, the other which does it for you online.
Snapshots been taken before installation
Snapshots being taken before installation

To begin with, you need to download and install a utility called ‘Cameyo’. This utility is nothing but an application virtualisation environment which packages the entire application including all settings, data, executable files, DLL files, registry entries and other necessary files into a single executable file. Once executed, the application is extracted into a temporary folder and the registry values and user settings etc. are temporarily added to their respective locations on the guest PC as if it was installed. Using this method, you will no longer need to install your apps every time you move from one computer to another.
Recording mode when an application is being installed
Recording mode when an application is being installed

Download Cameyo from ‘www.cameyo.com’ and install it on your PC. Before you begin, it is highly recommended that you scan your PC for any viruses and malware to avoid these being carried along in the portable app. It's also advised that you clear your PC of junk and temp files and defragment your hard drive. Make sure you have administrator privileges on your operating system or else you won’t be able to create the app.
Install your application
Install your application

Method 1: Creating portable apps on your own PC
Start Cameyo and you will be greeted with a huge listing of all the portable apps that have already been made and distributed for free. You can simply browse through the apps and if they are already there, simply download them and avoid the trouble of making them yourself. But if what you want is not listed, you will need to create it. Click on the Studio icon below. The interface will change to a new page with three icons. Click on ‘Capture App locally’. Now the utility starts working in the background and takes a complete screenshot of your computer’s operating system in the present state. This will take a while and depends on how fast your PC is and how many programs are already installed on the PC. Once it completes, you will be asked to install your desired software as usual while the Cameyo utility is running in the background, recording a log of all the changes the new software makes to the PC. Once the software is installed, click on the ‘Install Done’ button in the Cameyo window. If the application you just installed requires a PC reboot, go ahead but don’t click on the ‘Install Done’ button.
Snapshot post installation
Snapshot post installation

Once done, Cameyo will take another snapshot of the PC. It uses the two snapshots to create the portable app and stores the values in the app package itself. After Cameyo has finished working on the snapshots, you will get a message that the app has been created and stored in the user documents location. You will also have the option to edit the package. This is crucial at times because while you were installing the software, if you mistakenly accessed any document or file, the data could be stored in the portable app package. You can accidentally embed sensitive data from your PC into the portable app. Just edit the package and delete the unwanted files if any. That’s it! Copy the executable file to your USB drive and you are ready to go. You can also upload it to your Dropbox account if needed. Once your app is created, you can uninstall the software from your PC if you want.

How to Hide Files in a Calculator

Having read the title of this post you may be wondering if it’s really possible. Yeah! It is possible.

As the word suggests, it’s a calculator with a safe which is capable of storing and keeping your files and folders safe. The safe calculator looks just like the default calculator in Windows and in fact it can even perform calculations just like any other calculator. When you start Safe Calculator it will look just like the below picture.

The default code/ pin for the safe is ‘123’. So, to unlock you need to type ‘123’ in the calculator and press on ‘MS’, now the calculator will enter into safe mode. Here you can change the default pin if you want by clicking on ‘New pin’.

FAQ about Truecaller
Q: What is TrueCaller?
A: TrueCaller offers a form of Web-enabled caller ID for your Android, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Phone device! It enables you to match phone numbers to names, addresses, social networks, and even pictures!
With our unique phone number database TrueCaller enables you to identify numbers like no other service is able to.

Q: I can´t find TrueCaller on Android Market. How can I get it?
A: Visit truecaller.com from your phone´s browser to get it.

Q: What phones are supported?
A: Mostly all smartphones but check our Download page for a list of supported devices

Q: What countries are supported?
A: All countries!

Q: If I hard-reset my phone and re-install TrueCaller, do I have to pay the license again?
A: No, your IMEI is connected to our system so it will automatically detect that your payment has already been done during initialization.

Q: The application doesn't start properly with my Windows Mobile Device?
A: If your phone runs Windows Mobile operative system, please download Microsoft .NET CF 3.5, follow the links on the Download page. If you have a Symbian phone please verify that you have a proper internet connection.

Q: How can I add support for my country?
A: Please ask us using the sticky post in our blog and we will try adding the requested country.

Q: The phone number of a caller isn't shown, why doesn't Truecaller show that to me?
A: TrueCaller will only be activated on incoming calls where the number isn't previously stored on your cellphone and if the number isn't anonymous.

If a number has been saved twice in your phone book on a Symbian device (such as Nokia devices) the contact will not be displayed when a call is received and TrueCaller will not make a lookup because the number is still saved in your phone book.

Q: "Error: Please select your country in settings"
A: Open settings and select a new country and save. Then change back to your country and save. Make sure you have Internet connection available.
In Symbian version, check that your Access Point is correct in Settings.

Q: My requests are being processed slow, why?
A: If you have a very poor network connection it could take longer. A normal request time is between 1 and 5 seconds depending on country. Unfortunately the searchspeed in some countries may be slow because of the service provider.

Q: How much data-traffic does TrueCaller use?
A: The data is very optimized and therefor it will never be bigger than a 1 kb per request. To find out exactly how much that would cost you in your currency, please contact your operator.

Q: My phone is not supported, how can i get it supported?
A: Please leave us a message using the sticky post in our blog. If there is enough requests for a specific application, we may develop it!
If you are using a Windows Mobile Pro device and your phone is not in the list, you can try to select by OS.

Q: Does TrueCaller always work?
A: TrueCaller will always work provided you have 3G or EDGE or WLAN internet connection on your cellphone and the number is available on reverse phone number lookup services.

Q: The application cannot find any phone numbers?
A: Make sure you have selected your local country in Settings. Otherwise Truecaller will not be able to lookup local numbers. If you still experience problem with finding all numbers, please leave us a comment on the sticky post on our blog.

Q: When will UK be supported?
A: Due to some law restrictions TrueCaller will not be supported in UK. Hopefully we will be able to support UK in a near future but what we do support at the moment is a area localization function which shows you which area the area code belongs to.
Update: You can now use our CallerID+ in all countries including UK.

Q: I have bought a license of TrueCaller. Can I download a updated version from your website without losing my license?
A: Yes. Your phone is registred in our system as paid so you will always be able to get new updates. Even if you uninstall TrueCaller and install it later on it will still work. (This answer is only for users in countries where TrueCaller is not free)

Q: How do I opt-out my phone number from your application?
A: Please visit http://www.truecaller.com/?p=unlist_phone_number and enter your phone number and it will be removed within 3 days.
